Technological advancements, including generative AI attracted much attention in 2023, will not stop, and the threats associated with it will only increase. Meanwhile, the social environment is further widening community conflicts and disparities on various fronts. In this environment, each country, company, and even individual must have access to or exchange reliable information in order for us to act on the basis of correct information.
At Cyber Initiative Tokyo 2023, we invite leading experts from various fields related to the realization of a sustainable digital society to discuss topics that are inevitable for management and business operations.
In response to rising cyber risks, each country and region is preparing its own cyber security strategy. This session will discuss the characteristics of each strategy, how organizations and individuals should behave within this framework, and what "active cyber defense" should look like.
As cyber security and responsible digital governance moves from being an IT concern to a board level responsibility, what will the CISO role look like in 2024 and beyond? As companies look to take advantage of new technologies and accelerate their digital transformations, how can CISOs take a more active role in supporting their organisations with offensive security measures rather than relying on reactive defensive strategies?
Increased geopolitical risk and the outbreak of hybrid wars pose significant cyber risks not only to nations, but also to businesses. It is difficult to completely prevent sophisticated and persistent state-backed attacks, and how to continue doing business in the event of a breach is crucial. The vice president in charge of cybersecurity at an Israeli state-owned defense company talks about ensuring corporate resilience.

While technological advances bring us many benefits, they also have a negative side. For example, generative AI will benefit business, but at the same time, cyber attackers will be able to exploit it with greater precision if they exploit it. Also, quantum computing technology is evolving faster than predicted and will pose a threat to data encryption technology. Moreover, with the increasing reliance on infrastructure operated in space, cyber attacks are expanding into outer space. In this session, various experts in the latest high-profile technologies will share recent developments in their respective fields and discuss the risks inherent in the technologies and how to deal with them.
The National Security Strategy, revised at the end of 2022, clearly states that "Japan will promote studies to strengthen its information security, including security clearances, taking into account the information security practices of major countries and the needs of industries." In this session, we will clarify why security clearance is attracting attention now, and discuss its impact on the private sector and how it should behave in this environment.
Preparing for cyber risks is not enough to prepare for your own systems. Attackers will target subsidiaries, overseas offices, and even business partners. This is a so-called supply chain attack. Recently, supply chain risks are also lurking in the software that is embedded in the company's systems and products. In this session, we will share the latest information on supply chain attacks and discuss those countermeasures.
The risk of confusion caused by fake news has long been a concern, but with the rise of generative AI, the risk of confusion caused by fake news is increasing. 2024 will be a year of major elections around the world, and the generation of fake news is expected to become even more active. How can we distinguish the truth from falsehood among so much news? In this session, we will introduce the efforts of specialized organizations that have begun in Japan, and share the skills needed by individuals to judge the truth and falsity of news.
In line with the aims of the Cyber Initiative Tokyo, Nikkei Inc. has established the Cyber Index Awards in 2021 to recognise companies and initiatives that are achieving outstanding results in cybersecurity, a key area for significant progress in the digital transformation (DX) of the economy and society. An independent jury consisting of leading experts in the field, with the cooperation of Information Technology Federation of Japan, which conducts a large-scale survey on corporate cybersecurity, select the awards. By recognising outstanding initiatives, the awards aim to promote and disseminate best practices throughout industry and society at large.
The Winner of CYBER INDEX AWARDS 2022Ransomware attacks continue unabated, and in 2023 cloud services for social insurance workers and systems for container management at ports were among the targets. In this session, experts will explain what to learn from the latest cases and discuss how to deal with them.
