Vice Chairman, Kissinger Associates

Ambassador Robert Hormats joined Kissinger Associates in 2013. Previously, he served as U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Environmental Affairs from 2009 to 2013.

Prior to that, Ambassador Hormats was Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs (International); he was a member of the firm from 1982 to 2009. Before entering the private sector, he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, Ambassador and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, Senior Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs, and Chief Economic Advisor and Senior Staff Member for International Economic Affairs on the National Security Council beginning in 1969, respectively. He was the top US economic official engaged in the opening of relations with China while working for Dr. Kissinger in the early 1970s. He also has served as Sherpa/presidential advisor for ten G-7 and G-20 Summits.

In addition to China, Ambassador Hormats has worked extensively in the Republic of Korea, Japan, Western Europe, India, Russia, the Middle East and South East Asia. His areas of expertise and experience include international trade and investment, intellectual property protection, foreign investment in the US, protection of trade secrets and global energy issues.

Ambassador Hormats serves on board of the Investment Committee of Tiedemann Wealth Management Company and the American Tower Corporation, and is Chairman of the Board of the RAND Center for Asia and Pacific Policy (CAPP). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of New York; He has been awarded the French Legion of Honor and the German Commanders Cross.

He earned a BA from Tufts University in 1965, and an MA in 1966, and a PhD in 1970 in International Economics from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He has taught at Columbia, Princeton and Yale.
