TARIFF WAR

OVERVIEW

Two and half months after returning to office, U.S. President Donald Trump threw global markets into a tailspin with his “liberation day” tariffs. The shock was particularly keen in Asia, home to the world’s most advanced chip and electronics supply chains. Suppliers serving Apple, Microsoft, Google and other major brands have spent the last several years diversifying production away from China in part to reduce their exposure to geopolitical risks. Now they find themselves with nowhere to turn as Vietnam, Thailand and other emerging tech hubs in the region also face the threat of steep U.S. tariffs.

In “Tech Asia Live: What the trade war means for Asia’s supply chains,” Cheng Ting-Fang and Cissy Zhou, two of Nikkei Asia’s star tech reporters, discuss how companies are responding to the unfolding trade war and its relentless uncertainty, as well as what Trump’s trade policies mean for China and its attempt to strengthen its own tech manufacturing prowess.
