In 1982, she joined the Ministry of Finance. At the height of the Heisei financial crisis, she served as head of the Office of Securitization of Loans and other Financial Assets and created the first scheme for financial revitalization, the securitization of non-performing loans. In 2011, she was a key player in the establishment of the “Great East Japan Earthquake Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corporation Bill,” which was submitted to the Diet as legislation. She first joined the Cabinet in 2018 as minister in charge of regional development and women's empowerment. She is also the chairperson of the LDP's Research Commission on the Finance and Banking Systems, vice chairperson of the LDP's Research Commission on the Tax System, acting chairperson of the LDP's Policy Research Council and acting chairperson of the LDP's Policy Board in the House of Councilors.
