Dr AB Dey is the Founder Head of the Department of Geriatric Medicine in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and Patron of Association of Gerontology (India).
Dr Dey was admitted to the Faculty of Medicine of AIIMS in 1985 after completing residency, where he continued till August 2020. He served as Professor and Founder Head of the Department of Geriatric Medicine for 8 years and was the first Dean of Research from 2010 to 2013.
Nominated by the Government of India, Dr A B Dey received his training in Geriatric Medicine from Royal Victoria Infirmary at Newcastle-Upon Tyne in the United Kingdom in 1995 under Commonwealth Medical Fellowship. After which he was assigned to establish old age care as a distinct specialty of medicine in India through a WHO India supported initiative. Through this initiative he also established the Indian Academy of Geriatrics as the Founder President in 2002. Starting from a weekly clinic, the Geriatric Service of AIIMS became a full-fledged department in 2012. In 2023, the Department was upgraded as a National Center of Ageing by Government of India.
Dr AB Dey has carried out several research projects and published extensively on various aspects of old age health and health care including a large longitudinal cognitive ageing study involving respondents of Longitudinal Ageing Study of India. Dr Dey has been involved in promoting application of IT based technologies in health care and chairs funding committees of Department of Biotechnology and Department of Science and Technology under Government of India.
Dr AB Dey has been closely associated with World Health Organization in developing training protocols and strategy for development of old age care and is a member of Clinical Consortium on Health Ageing, Consortium on Metrics and Measurement of Healthy Ageing and Global Network on Long Term Care of WHO.
For his contributions to transform geriatrics to an exciting and truly impactful field that fosters healthy ageing for all, Dr Dey was recognized as one of the 50 Healthy Ageing Leaders by UN-WHO in UN Decade of Healthy Ageing in September 2022.
After superannuation Dr AB Dey is now working as Director of Venu Geriatric Institute under the aegis of a not-for-profit organization Venu Charitable Society, New Delhi, to establish a novel model of care aiming at wellness and healthy ageing.
