Hermann Gumpp received his PhD in Physics from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), following studies in physics, biophysics, and informatics. His work as researcher bridged nano-scale biophysics and advanced information science with applications in High Performance Computing, large-scale infrastructure architecture focussing on network and cybersecurity.
He lived and worked in Japan for several years, including at the National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo, actively contributing to Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris and FOSS users groups.
In 2017, he established Enobyte GmbH, a Munich-based LegalTech and Cybersecurity firm dedicated to European data protection (GDPR), cybersecurity legislation like NIS2, CRA and cross-border digital compliance for European and Japanese enterprises.
He has long been engaged in building practical bridges between EU regulatory frameworks and Japanese corporate IT, and is known as one of the most active Germany–Japan specialists in data protection and cybersecurity.
In 2018, he co-authored Japanese-language GDPR Guidebook, one of the earliest comprehensive introductions of EU data-protection practices to Japanese industry, which became widely referenced among practitioners.
Since 2021 he serves as Special Advisor for Cybersecurity & Data Protection at the Japanese-German Business Association (DJW), leads its IT Working Group, advises numerous Japanese corporations, and is active in multilateral digital-policy and cybersecurity forums.
